EDUSAT

EDUSAT is an abbreviation for Education Satellite. It was launched into space by ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) on 21 September 2004.

Similar to Direct-to-Home Television, the satellite beams educational programmes to educational institutions in India.

In 1975-76, a test programme was made in India, through SITE (Satellite Instructional Television Experiment) using an American satellite. Then ISRO launched INSAT in 1983 and a variety of educational programmes. With the success of INSAT, it was decided to launch a dedicated satellite for educational purposes.

EDUSAT is the first exclusive satellite serving educational sector. Its transponders cover the entire country. It is placed at 36,000 Km height Geostationary Orbit. The satellite weighs 1950 Kg and is designed to provide service for about 10 years. EDUSAT provides connectivity to schools and colleges.

The main use of EDUSAT is the facility to broadcast a lecture given by a professor at a studio to all connected institutions. A lecture given by an eminent professor can be seen and heard in many institutions. Interaction with faculty by students is also possible.Anna University became the first university to uplink signals on the EDUSAT.

Sudharsan Engineering College has installed equipment for linking to Anna University programmes. The EDUSAT classroom in the college is located in the Sona Computer centre. The educational programmes (lectures) that will be broadcast as published by Anna University in advance. Students can get the details in Sona centre.
